Background
Approximately three years after the beginning of revelation, conventionally placed at around 613 CE, the tenth year before the Hijrah, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded by Allah, the Most High, to declare the message of Islam openly to his closest kin and to the Quraysh of Makkah. The Qur'an records the command: 'And warn your nearest kin' (Surat al-Shu'ara' 26:214). The narrative of the public call is preserved in Sahih al-Bukhari (no. 4770) and Sahih Muslim (no. 208) on the authority of 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas (radiyallahu 'anhuma): the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended Mount Safa, the small rocky outcrop at the foot of the Ka'ba, and gave the cry by which the clans of Quraysh were summoned together for matters of the gravest urgency. When they had assembled, he asked them whether they would believe him if he told them that an army was emerging from behind the hill to attack them; they answered that they had never known him to lie. He then declared to them that he was a warner sent to them before a severe punishment. The famous response of his uncle Abu Lahab, 'tabban laka' (perish you), and the Qur'anic answer in Surat al-Masad (Q 111) followed. The moment is treated in the Sirah tradition (Ibn Hisham, al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir's al-Bidaya wa al-Nihaya, al-Mubarakpuri's al-Rahiq al-Makhtum) as the formal opening of the public mission in Makkah; the three years of private da'wah that had preceded it gave way to the open call from the foot of the sacred precinct. This scene depicts the moment of assembly, with the clans of Quraysh gathered around the outcrop below and the focal call from above not depicted in identifiable form.
What you see
A low rocky outcrop of grey-brown granite rises just outside the Ka'ba precinct. Below the outcrop, a small open court opens onto a modest cubic shrine of bare stone, the Ka'ba in its pre-Islamic form, the most recognisable landmark of pre-Hijra Makkah.
The Ka'ba stands undefended by any enclosure: no arcaded haram precinct, no marble paving, no surrounding mosque. Around the small open court, the modest mud-brick houses of the Quraysh quarters rise in irregular terraces along the valley walls.
The outcrop and its neighbour, the rise of al-Marwah a short distance to the north, frame the narrow valley between them. Centuries later this is the line of the ritual sa'i; in this scene the two hills are still bare rock, no covered walkway, no electric lighting.
The clans of Quraysh are gathered around the foot of the outcrop in distinct family groupings, Banu Hashim, Banu 'Abd Shams, Banu Makhzum, Banu Asad and the rest, summoned by the cry that the early sources record was used to muster clans only for matters of grave urgency.
At the top of the outcrop, the focal vantage from which the call is being made, no figure is depicted in identifiable form, in accordance with the Sunni visual restraint regarding the depiction of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The scene reads the moment through the assembled clans below, listening upward, and the worn stone of the outcrop itself.
Around the Ka'ba's base, the carved idols of pre-Islamic Makkah remain in their positions, Hubal at the largest plinth, smaller wooden and stone figures arranged around the precinct. Their presence dates the scene firmly before the conquest of Makkah.
The light is hard Hijazi early-afternoon sun. The day in the Arabic chronological tradition is in the third year after the beginning of revelation, corresponding to approximately 613 CE. The previous three years of preaching had been private; this moment is the public declaration of the message to the clans of Quraysh assembled together.
The call is the response to the divine command preserved in the Qur'an: 'And warn your nearest kin' (Surat al-Shu'ara' 26:214). The historical moment is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari (4770) and Sahih Muslim (208) on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas (radiyallahu 'anhuma).
